Jim heads the Firm’s aviation group based in London. Jim qualified as a barrister in 2005 and specialises in aviation law, aviation litigation, air accidents, aircraft operations, inquests and military law.
Prior to qualifying as a barrister, Jim was a professional Royal Air Force pilot for 10 years and was qualified on a number of military aircraft (single piston, single turbo prop, fast jet, twin turbo prop, four engine heavy jet), with his last flying tour on the Boeing E-3D AWACS. He received specialist training in aviation accident analysis and crew resource management, to become a Squadron Flight Safety Officer. He also was a flying display coordinator for the RAF Waddington International Air Show.
After his flying career, Jim was a legal officer in the RAF then, in 2008, he moved into private practice in London with a focus on aviation law and high value international aviation litigation. Jim’s extensive combined experience as a professional pilot and lawyer spans over 31 years, which has enabled him to provide his clients with a class leading level of service. He has been involved in hundreds of instructions/ cases in multiple jurisdictions, including England, Scotland, Republic of Ireland, the US, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Australia, France, Spain, Sweden, South Africa, Nigeria, DRC, Sudan, Tanzania, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Rwanda, Libya, Thailand, Singapore and Vietnam.
Due to Jim’s reputation as an aviation expert, he is regularly requested by the press to provide expert commentary on aviation issues/ air accidents and invited by academic/ legal institutions to chair and present at international aviation law conferences.
Jim is also a specialist in inquest law and military law. He is the advocate for families at complex inquests and advises and represents military personnel and their families on military and civil law issues.
In his own time, Jim enjoys renovating period properties and international vacations with his wife and children.
